 | Prevention of Domestic Violence Act New Jersey (25th Feb 25 at 1:30pm UTC) | | The Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (PDVA) of New Jersey is a comprehensive law designed to protect victims of domestic abuse and hold offenders accountable. Enacted to provide immediate and long-term relief, the PDVA covers various forms of abuse, including assault, harassment, stalking, terroristic threats, sexual assault, false imprisonment, and criminal mischief.
This law applies to individuals in spousal, dating, cohabiting, or co-parenting relationships. When a victim reports domestic violence, law enforcement can issue a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) for immediate protection. A court hearing follows to determine whether a Final Restraining Order (FRO) should be issued. Unlike in many states, New Jersey’s FROs are permanent unless successfully appealed. | |
